Gradient Map Conversion Method


Gradient map is a simple method that gives good results
Steps in Photoshop
  1. Set the forground color to black (0, 0, 0) and the background color to white (255, 255, 255), or click on the default forground/background colors.
  2. Select: Image > Adjustment > Gradient Map...

Here is a sample photograph converted using this method.

This method gives better results than the straight grayscale conversion. Here is the color chart converted using the gradient map method.

GREEN 156
BLUE 18
CYAN 190
MAGENTA99
YELLOW 237

As you can see, we get a better range of gray tones than we did with straight grayscale conversion. The BLUE is much darker, the YELLOW is much ligher, and RED, GREE, CYAN and MAGENTA are four distinct shades of gray.
